OpenAI lands $110 billion in investments from Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank

OpenAI said Friday it is getting $110 billion in new investment at a $730 billion pre-money valuation, with Amazon putting in $50 billion and Nvidia and SoftBank each adding $30 billion. The company also said more investors are expected to join as the round goes on.

The investment is tied to a wider set of infrastructure deals. OpenAI said it has entered a multiyear partnership with Amazon and expanded its long-running relationship with Nvidia, tying the new money directly to the hardware and cloud capacity behind its AI products. Amazon’s part begins with $15 billion upfront, with another $35 billion to come once certain conditions are met.

Under that deal, OpenAI said it will use 2 gigawatts of computing capacity built on Amazon’s Trainium chips. AWS will also become the exclusive third-party cloud distribution provider for OpenAI Frontier, the company’s platform for businesses building and managing AI agents. OpenAI and Amazon said they will also build custom models for Amazon’s customer-facing products, giving the partnership a business use beyond raw computing power.

OpenAI said it is also expanding its work with Nvidia, including 3 gigawatts of dedicated inference capacity and 2 gigawatts of training on Vera Rubin systems. The company said that it builds on Hopper and Blackwell systems already running across Microsoft, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and CoreWeave.

The company used the post to show how fast its products are growing. OpenAI said ChatGPT now has more than 900 million weekly active users and over 50 million consumer subscribers. It also said more than 9 million paying business users rely on ChatGPT for work. The point OpenAI is making is pretty clear. Demand is already here at a huge scale, and the next race is about who can build enough infrastructure to keep up.

OpenAI also made a point of saying the Amazon deal does not push Microsoft aside. The company said its partnership with Microsoft remains in place, with Azure staying the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI’s APIs and OpenAI’s own products continuing to run on Azure.

One detail that stood out was the nonprofit side. OpenAI said the new valuation raises the value of the OpenAI Foundation’s stake in OpenAI Group to more than $180 billion, giving it more room to fund work in areas such as health breakthroughs and AI resilience.
