OpenAI is developing a GitHub alternative, The Information reports

OpenAI is said to be building a new code-hosting platform that could eventually compete with Microsoft-owned GitHub, according to a report from The Information. The project is still in its early stages, but the report says employees have discussed whether it could later be offered to OpenAI’s customers.

The push seems to have come from a practical problem rather than a grand product reveal. Reuters said OpenAI engineers had to deal with a string of service disruptions that left GitHub unavailable in recent months. That appears to have nudged the company toward building something of its own. The report added that the product is likely still months away.

The move would fit with where OpenAI has already been heading. The company recently introduced its Codex app as a hub for building with agents, and it already offers Codex CLI for working with local repositories from the terminal. In other words, they have been moving beyond code generation and closer to the tools developers use to manage real software work.

If that project ever turns into a commercial product, OpenAI would be stepping onto ground that belongs to one of Microsoft’s most important developer businesses. That would make it an awkward expansion, given how closely tied the two companies still are.

As of now, nothing has been announced yet. Reuters said they could not independently verify the report. OpenAI, ‌GitHub and Microsoft did not immediately respond to their requests for comment.

This shows how far OpenAI’s coding ambitions may be expanding. The company now appears to be looking more closely at the systems developers use to store, manage, and work on software in the first place.
